alb3647151 Portrait of a Young Girl. Artist: Mary Cassatt (American, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 1844-1926 Le Mesnil-Théribus, Oise). Dimensions: 29 x 24 1/8 in. (73.7 x 61.3 cm). Date: 1899.In "Portrait of a Young Girl," Cassatt posed her young model outdoors, probably at or near Château Beaufresne, the home the artist had purchased in the Oise River valley, about fifty miles northwest of Paris, in 1894. As in contemporary images of women and girls by William Merritt Chase, Frank W. Benson, and others, the girl appears immersed in nature and isolated from the outside world. The high vantage point, flattened space, and absence of a horizon, all suggesting the influence of Japanese art, are compositional devices that Cassatt also used in her color prints of the 1890s. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Mary Cassatt.

alb3620545 At the Seaside. Artist: William Merritt Chase (American, Williamsburg, Indiana 1849-1916 New York). Dimensions: 20 x 34 in. (50.8 x 86.4 cm). Date: ca. 1892.Beginning in 1891 Chase taught at a summer art school in Shinnecock, Long Island. The following year, he and his family moved into their new summer home, Shinnecock Hall, which had been designed and built by the well-known firm of McKim, Mead and White. Chase taught at the beach resort until 1902, conducting open-air classes for as many as a hundred students each summer. This work is characteristic of the outdoor scenes that Chase painted during the 1890s on Long Island beaches. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3648055 Pink Azalea--Chinese Vase. Artist: William Merritt Chase (American, Williamsburg, Indiana 1849-1916 New York). Dimensions: 23 1/2 x 16 9/16 in. (59.7 x 42.1 cm). Date: 1880-90 (?).Although Chase executed about 120 still life paintings, only ten were based on flowers. However, vases of flowers occasionally appear in his interior scenes and in his portraits. In this canvas an azalea shrub is depicted in a Chinese export porcelain vase, which is presumably used as a planter. Chase was an avid collector of bric-à-brac, including Asian artifacts. The asymmetrical composition of this painting hints at another important aspect of Chase's orientalism: his willingness to emulate some of the basic design principles of Far Eastern art. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
